Why Film?
My approach to film photography is one very much inspired by the day to day. Beauty isn’t just found in a towering mountain range or a field of flowers, we can also find it in the form of a solitary alleyway or a commanding stop sign. I’ve always found 35mm film to be one of the most nostalgic image formats out there. It has the capabilities to capture vibrant colors and sharp textures to be sure, but what sells it for me is the grain.
Whenever I see a photograph with some grain, I know that it was shot with intention; a snap of the shutter and a small prayer. A prayer that the exposure was just right, the target was in focus, and the lighting was favorable. The uncertainty in the outcome is part of the thrill in film photography. And more oft than not, the shots will have some sort of imperfection(s) and never see the light of day.
But every once in a while the planets line up, and you get the shot you intended. This mixture of precariousness and nostalgia is the reason I love film as a media to trap moments in time.
I hope you enjoy the moments I’ve captured over the years just as much as I do.
Best,
Andre
